Brunner on Hort

Brunner on Hort

Brunner on Hort Convention. I’m Greg Martin with today’s Fruit Grower Report.

Jay Brunner will be one of many industry leaders attending this years annual Washington State Horticultural Associations meeting and expo. He gives us an idea of what will be discussed.

BRUNNER: I’ve organized a session that’s associated with our specialty crop research initiative grant on enhancing bio control in orchard systems and we have several speakers, including outside speakers from California talking about different aspects of the results from our project.

Brunner discusses some of the specific topics.

BRUNNER: We’re covering things like an overview of biological control and integrated pest management and Nick Mills from UC Berkeley is going to be introducing the topic and he’s known worldwide for his expertise in biological control. And then Vince Jones is going to be talking on new monitoring methods we’ve developed for bio-control agents.

He says they have developed monitoring tools for pests, now they are doing the same for natural enemies of the pests.

BRUNNER: In addition to that we’re developing predictive models for natural enemies so we can have some idea based on degree days when certain natural enemies are going to be present in the orchard so that we can avoid applying disruptive sprays when they’re most present and hopefully conserve them.

We’ll talk more with Jay Brunner on Monday,

That’s today’s Fruit Grower Report. I’m Greg Martin on the Ag Information Network.
