I’m Susan Allen welcome to Open Range, I’ll be back to tell you about a program at WSU that is a win win for both students and our regions cattle producer. Cougar Cattle Feeders is a group of WSU students who share a passion for the beef industry. Cattle producers throughout our region donate feeder steers or heifers to the group, cattle are then fed out. While the students learn the industry hands-on, producers learn about thier animals from  monthly reports and both live and carcass data. . Donating to Cougar Cattle feeder’s cash or cattle helps insure WSU grads will leaders in the future of the beef industry. Here is Cougar Feeder Jessica Zimmerman:

“ The way we are running this year is that we have 90 head from Washington Cattle Feeders and that gives us more of an idea of how a uniform larger scale pens feeds out. In contrast our donated pens are really pieced together, they have a lot of different backgrounds and sometimes that poses new challenges so it shows us different scenarios we might face out in the beef industry.”
Donating either cash or cattle helps insure WSU grades become leaders in the beef industry and according to Jessica any amount is appreciated because the team would like to do more tours this year having already visited Preformax and other feed lots. They are also interested in visiting private ranches. For more information contact cougarcattlefeeders@hotmail.com
