Welcome to Open Range, I’m Susan Allen. Stay tuned because after the break I’ll check in with our field reporter, Greg Martin for the AgriBeef Minute.

I’m Greg Martin with today’s AgriBeef Minute. Some time back we talked with registered dietician, Andrea Robertson about the importance of beef in your children's diets but the same holds true for the elderly members of your family.

ROBERTSON: As we age sometimes appetite decreases and so it’s really important to make each meal count. We see a lot of ads on the television that are aimed at the elderly in that if they are not as hungry they can get all these great nutrients in a can.

Robertson says there’s really no need to use cans to boost nutrition when you can use real food.

ROBERTSON: So at a time when food really matters lean beef is a great solution that can help satisfy and appetite and provide more nutrients and less intake than a lot of other food. And nutrient lean beef helps provide iron, protein, zinc, B-vitamins.

That means a more active lifestyle as we get older plus keep immune systems functioning. For the elderly sometimes preparation is a concern.

ROBERTSON: Hamburger works really, really well because you can cook it up; it freezes very well and then it thaws very well. And it’s easy to chew. Sometimes especially as we get older chewing things gets a little bit more difficult.

I’m Greg Martin and that’s today’s AgriBeef Minute.

Thanks Greg. Don’t forget Greg will be back each Wednesday with the AgriBeef Minute. Agri Beef Co - Real Families, Great People, Exceptional Beef. I’m Susan Allen.
