Obama On Debt Plan & Dairy Greenhouse Gas

Obama On Debt Plan & Dairy Greenhouse Gas plus Food Forethought. I’m Greg Martin with today’s Northwest Report.

Well, it’s a done deal. President Obama has signed the historic debt deal into law. He signed the bill privately in the Oval Office little more than an hour after the Senate voted final passage.

OBAMA: This compromise guarantees more than 2-trillion in deficit reduction. It’s an important first step to ensuring that as a nation we live within our means. Yet it also allows us to keep making key investments in things like education and research that leads to new jobs. And assures that we are not cutting too abruptly while the economy is still fragile. This is however just the first step. This compromise requires that both parties work together on a larger plan to cut the deficit which is important for the long term health of our economy.

The USDA has released the first detailed data on the amount of greenhouse gases commercial dairies emit in southern Idaho. Researchers on two farms with a total of 20-thousand cows showed an average of 3,575 pounds of ammonia, 33,092 pounds of methane and 409 pounds of nitrous oxide every day. The emissions varied by the time of day and the season of the year. The data showed that greenhouse gases were the most potent from afternoon to mid-evening, due to the higher temperatures and increased wind activity.

Now with today’s Food Forethought, here’s Lacy Gray.

Here we go again. Alabama is now being sued by the federal government for its tough new immigration law; a law that the current administration sees as overstepping its boundaries, claiming that such immigration laws by states interferes with the federal government’s enforcement of immigration law. There in lies the rub. How can you interfere with something that is virtually non-existent? Representatives of the Justice Department state that “Alabama’s immigration law is designed to affect every aspect of an “unauthorized immigrant’s” daily life, from employment, to housing, to going to school”. Excuse me, aren’t we talking about unauthorized, or illegal immigrants here?! To imply that controlling immigration is racist is poppycock. Immigration control is applied world wide. Immigrants of all races and ethnicities are required in countries across the globe to go through legal immigration processing. There is a rather simplified solution: no free government programs, schooling, medical treatment, driving licenses, or jobs for illegals: in essence, removing the incentives, should remove the problem.

Thanks Lacy. That’s today’s Northwest Report. I’m Greg Martin on the Ag Information Network.
