7-8 FB Big Weeds

Leftovers from a cold wet spring.

Not very long ago I attended a cattleman’s meeting down in the Twin Falls area. I was driving along with my boss and friend Kelly Allen and we both noticed the same thing in farm country. There were beautiful rows and rows of crops, but they weren’t very tall rows. We looked at each other as we were driving along and thought “my goodness the rain and cold that ushered in the spring and stayed with us all through the spring had an effect on agriculture.” One thing that didn’t miss our attention was the number of weeds and their size. The weeds were quite literally growing like weeds. Don Morishita, a University of Idaho Extension weed scientist who serves as Kimberly Research and Extension Center superintendent weighed in with some thoughts: “ The weeds are just growing so much faster than the corn is because the cold wet weather was really holding back the corn and I have seen fields as I have driven around that are heavily infested with weeds and the corn is small and I would definitely recommend trying to control those as soon as possible.”
