7-7 FB Cow Welfare

Welfare-friendly dairy cattle housing.  What in the world does that mean? I am David Sparks and I will answer that question next.  I received some information from veterinarian Dr. Rebecca Brotzman.  Here’s what it said.  “We have some good news to share from The Dairyland Initiative at the School of Veterinary Medicine, University of Wisconsin-Madison.  We would greatly appreciate your help in spreading the word about this great program to help dairy producers build and remodel their barns in which the needs of the cows, calves or heifers come first.

The latest information on “cow comfort” and healthy heifer housing has become even more accessible.Veterinarians in North America may now register for a free two-year subscription to The Dairyland Initiative’s website, thanks to a generous sponsorship by Pfizer Animal Health. The Initiative aims to facilitate the construction of welfare-friendly dairy cattle housing, providing an optimal environment that promotes the health and productivity of calves, heifers and cows. The latest in science-based dairy facility design and management recommendations can be found at http://thedairylandinitiative.vetmed.wisc.edu. Veterinarians should contact a Pfizer Animal Health representative to obtain the passcode for a free two-year web access subscription.
