WSU Lind Field Day tomorrow
Washington Ag Today June 15, 2011 Washington State University holds its 95th Annual Lind Field Day tomorrow at the Lind Dryland Research Station. WSU agronomist Bill Schillinger highlights what participants will see on the field tour. Schillinger: “We are going to have seven stops in the field. Ian Burke, weed scientist from WSU is going to be talking about weed control in wheat. Arron Carter our new wheat breeder, will be talking about winter wheat breeding. Spring wheat will be covered by Stephen Guy. Scot Hulbert has a big project at Lind on drought tolerance of wheat. And we, the Lind Station personnel, have a new deep-furrow drill prototype we are going to introduce. We will have some form of this drill by field day. Hopefully something we can pull through the soil and demonstrate but we are not promising anything.” Schillinger says a first will be the showing of camelina cropping systems. Schillinger: “And this is where we are growing camelina in rotation with wheat. So we are comparing the standard winter wheat fallow rotation with a three-year winter wheat/camelina summer fallow rotation. And camelina of course is the oilseed crop that is being touted for the aviation industry. Everyone wants camelina oil for aviation fuel both for civilian aircraft and for military.” Registration for the Lind Field Day tomorrow begins at 8:30 a.m. with plot tours starting at nine a.m. There will be a complimentary lunch and Washington pesticide and CEU credits will be available.
