A NO-COST SUGAR PROGRAM SHOULD FARE WELL AS CONGRESS LOOKS TO CUT SPENDING.

Idaho’s sugarbeet farmers should be doing back flips for a number of reasons these days. First of all we got the nod for Roundup ready sugar beets and that means planting can go on. Also prices are supposed to be going up. Now let’s turn our attention to the nation. All the talk in our nation’s capital these days seems to be focused on trimming bloated federal budgets and reducing debt. According to Jeff Landry - a freshman Congressman from Louisiana - this atmosphere is a big positive for America’s sugar farmers…The sugar program is not taxpayer-funded. It is a zero cost to the taxpayers so it helps farmers without direct subsidies coming from the federal government so these types of programs fare a lot better than other programs.

What’s more - Landry says the taxpayers are getting a lot in return for this zero dollar investment. He says they’re getting a high-quality homegrown ingredient that’s essential to the food supply - and a strong sugar industry that creates good paying U.S. jobs.
