1-12 IAN Elk and Ag

Each winter about 3,000 elk winter at the Tex Creek Wildlife Management Area. The Idaho Department of Fish & Game is working to make the public aware of a herd of 200-300 elk that have left the Tex Creek Wildlife Management Area east of Idaho Falls, Idaho and moved into fields adjacent to State Highway 26 near Ririe, Idaho.

According to Regional Conservation Educator Gregg Losinski, there is a potential risk to agricultural producers in the area:”These animals are too close to humans in a lot of respects. Some are getting too close to domestic cattle operations so we’ve got the disease concern that’s always there and there’s a large number of haystacks in the area so there could be some ag damage. We don’t want these animals to get the word back to their buddies that there’s lots of good food over here.”
