Another Egg Recall & Turkey Prices Higher

Another Egg Recall & Turkey Prices Higher plus Food Forethought. I'm Greg Martin with today's Northwest Report. Cuts in production and stocks are giving the turkey industry much higher prices this year so this year's Thanksgiving bird will cost more according to USDA economist, Dave Harvey. HARVEY: The wholesale price in the third quarter for whole hen turkeys averaged around .98 a pound and that's up about 25% from third quarter 2009. Now what we're forecasting now for fourth quarter currently is between $1.02 and $1.04 a pound and again that would be up around 25%. Yet another mid-west egg company is recalling eggs due to salmonella and this time it's from the nations biggest egg seller and distributor. The recall is for some 288-thousand eggs. None of the eggs have been distributed in the northwest however the eggs from Ohio Fresh were distributed to food wholesalers and retailers in Arkansas, California, Illinois, Iowa, Kansas, Missouri, Oklahoma, and Texas. No illnesses have been reported. But it once again brings to light the need for additional food safety measures. Now with today's Food Forethought, here's Lacy Gray. Well, whether your preferred candidate won or lost in the past weeks elections one very good thing will come with the end of the political season, the removal of political signs! There are numerous things in this world that cause me irritation, cell phone users in restaurants, dog walkers who leave "presents" in my yard, public rest rooms with no tissue, soap, or towels, and politicians who fail to take down their campaign signs after elections. Most cities have a time frame given in which politicians have to remove their campaign signs before being fined. Whether or not fines are ever issued remains to be seen as it appears most of these signs are still quite visible long after the elections are over. I understand the necessity of these signs and will even go so far as to say political signs offer a visual testimony to our country's greatness and our right to free speech. But it would behoove politicians to realize that it would be an even more magnanimous gesture to their constituents and speak volumes of their true character by how quickly they take down their signs after the election, regardless of whether they've won or lost. Thanks Lacy. That's today's Northwest Report. I'm Greg Martin on the Ag Information Network.
