RMA announces base price for 2011 crop wheat

Farm and Ranch September 21, 2010 The USDA’s Risk Management Agency has approved a base price for 2011 crop wheat for the Common Crop Insurance Policy. For Washington, Oregon and Idaho that base price is $7.12 a bushel. For barley in the region the base price is $3.91 a bushel. RMA also says that in accordance with the Small Grains Crop Insurance Malting Barley Price and Quality Endorsement, the 2011 crop year value price under option A is $1.05 for winter seeded malting barley.

This is the first year for the new COMBO policy and the sales closing date is coming up September 30th. Jo Lynne Seufer with the regional RMA office says producers received a letter from their insurance agent earlier in the year.

Seufer: “And said, hey if you like the options you already have under Crop Revenue Coverage and you want to continue that then they can. They can continue it without doing anything. But we always suggest a producer meet annually with their agent, particularly right before sales closing date to see if there are any changes that maybe they want to do. You know, looking ahead and knowing if there are any changes on the farm. But no. it is really an easy transition. That is what is exciting as well about it.”

In addition to wheat and barley with winter coverage, September 30th is also the sales closing date in the Pacific Northwest for Mint with Winter Coverage, Dry Pea/Lentil with Winter Coverage, Forage, Forage Alfalfa Seed Pilot, Apiculture and Pasture, Rangeland Forage crop insurance.
