Apple Exports & Harvest Update

Apple Exports & Harvest Update. I'm Greg Martin with today's Fruit Grower Report. We are into the first full week of September with Labor Day now behind us and Todd Fryhover, President, Washington Apple Commission says the apple harvest is really picking up. FRYHOVER: Gala harvest is going very well and everyone is in strong position to get the Gala's in. Golden's are starting in earnest as well. We've had some very nice weather lately, it's been cool promoting color so I think we are finding a lot of growers are nit getting overly aggressive especially on bi-color and red varieties. NW growers should have something to look forward to as Fryhover says the export market looks great. FRYHOVER: We had not only the U.S. forecast which is going to be down about 4 – actually the total U.S. crop is down about 6% compared to last year but the real interesting thing is places like the EU is going to be off 11%. China for the first time in a decade is actually anticipating a smaller crop than normal. Even the Mexico tariff issue is somewhat negated. FRYHOVER: The Mexican crop is anticipated to be down around 10% so maybe there's even some enthusiasm in that market as we look ahead to the next 6 to 8 months. You know it's really difficult to ascertain what's going to happen when you have these difficult issues that pop up out of thin air so to speak but you have to remain optimistic. We ship a lot of apples down into Mexico, over 10 million boxes this last season alone That's today's Fruit Grower Report. I'm Greg Martin on the Ag Information Network.
