Checking In On Apple Season

Checking In On Apple Season

Checking In On Apple Season. I'm Greg Martin with today's Fruit Grower Report. August has past the halfway point and that means that apple harvest will soon be here. Todd Fryhover, president of the Washington Apple Commission gives us a preview. FRYHOVER: The August first estimate is out and it looks like it's going to be a crop that's very similar to two years ago as far as volume goes and we had great success in moving that crop and things are actually looking very positive for this season as well. This year they're looking at a crop volume of 108,820,000 cartons. One of the big factors that normally puts a crimp in a crop seems to be minimized this year. FRYHOVER: Chile should be out of our way which leaves the pipeline open and free. The East Coast producers are looking at a reduced crop volume in comparison to last year. The European crop is off 11% according to recent predictions. China has had some weather issues also so from a competitive standpoint it looks like the pipeline is empty and we should have lots of opportunities for Washington apples in the marketplace. So...when do we start picking apples? FRYHOVER: I think it's a little bit early for harvest to start on Gala but I would guess maybe by next week if we get through this hot weather that we are anticipating for the balance of this week, you could see harvest commence toward the latter half of next week. That's today's Fruit Grower Report. I'm Greg Martin on the Ag Information Network.
