Winter and spring wheat harvest progress

Farm and Ranch August 17, 2010 When it comes to harvesting this year’s U.S. winter wheat crop, USDA chief meteorologist Brad Rippey says the PNW is where most of the action is now.

Rippey: “Winter wheat harvest almost wrapped up, 91%. Five year average is 96%. Only four states still harvesting; Idaho, Montana, Oregon and Washington.”

The winter wheat harvest was 81 percent complete in Oregon to start this week, 52 percent complete in Washington with the winter wheat harvest pace in Idaho at 24 percent complete.

And the U.S. spring wheat harvest?

Rippey: “Thirty-four percent complete on August 15th. That‘s behind the five year average of 44%, but ahead of last year‘s number of 13%. Spring wheat harvest ranges from four percent complete in Idaho to 81% in South Dakota. Spring wheat, the condition continues to hold steady as harvest is well underway, so 82% good to excellent. That is equal to a week ago and better than last year‘s number of 74 percent.”

In Washington 27 percent of the spring wheat has been harvested which compares to the five year average for now of 54 percent. That four percent completion in Idaho of the spring wheat harvest is well behind the five year average of 25 percent.

The U.S. barley harvest is running 35 points behind average at only ten percent complete.

Cumulative results of samples tested by the Wheat Marketing Center in Portland has the PNW soft white wheat crop averaging 60.6 pounds for test weight with low protein of 9.3 percent.
