United Farm Workers campaign invites U.S. citizens to replace immigrant farm workers

Northwest Report June 28, 2010 The United Farm Workers has started a campaign challenging U.S. citizens and legal residents to replace immigrant field laborers. It is called “Take Our Jobs.” UFW President Arturo Rodriguez says even with double digit unemployment rates, few legal residents are seeking jobs on the farm.

Rodriguez: “It is important that people that are out there right now saying that saying that the economic problems really come from immigrants in our country are failing to look at the realities we face in the agriculture industry today. And as Rob Williams has mentioned somewhere between 50 to 66% of our farm labor supply today are unauthorized workers. Everybody knows that. And when laws are passed that target undocumented workers people don‘t stop and think, what is that going to do the nation‘s food supply in the even any law like that is really implemented. Who is going to harvest the crops.”

Organizers of the campaign are scheduled to make a national broadcast appearance on the Colbert Show set for July 8th .

The UFW supports the AgJobs bill that would give undocumented farm workers presently here the right to earn legal status.
