Cash-in on Cash Crops

Despite the fact that a few years ago a 35 year old veteran of Wall Street James P. Owen penned the best seller Cowboy Ethics, What Wall Street Can Learn from the Code of the West  the Wall Street crowd turned a deaf ear leaving the average American,  like me,  pretty dang sour about investing in the stock market.  But what are the alternatives for those of us disgusted with the corruption? Hi I’m Susan Allen I’ll be back to share some ideas. There doesn’t seem to be many safe investment options these days, gold? If you’re a real risk taker, residential real estate, cattle, cutting ,show and  race horse syndication?   All big gambles but a recent Wall Street Journal investment article touted the benefits of farmland. Some financial planers are advocating their clients purchase and lease high quality crop acreage with expectations of three to five percent yearly returns and the possibility of appreciation .  Buying crop land doesn’t have to be in the scale of celebrity ranches in fact some investors are grabbing up small Midwest farms less than 200 acres they can finance through a mortgage broker, then  hire a farm management firm to manage yearly details. My brother –in-Law Sterling Allen is a farm consultant out of the Pendleton area who recently located a property for some Portland investors and was able to negotiate a better price per acre then they had ever imagined. He’ll  continue to manage rental agreements, and other details to help his absentee clients maximize thier profits.  Other owners, especially retired investors enjoy being hands on,  even purchasing seeds and chemicals and periodically visiting their farm. In the end, with all the stock market turmoil and corruption some investors are turning their cash into..... cash crops. I’m Susan Allen
