Portland Commits to Green Technology & Dealing with Child Labor

Portland Commits to Green Technology & Dealing with Child Labor. I'm Greg Martin with today's Northwest Report. The Children's Act for Responsible Employment, or CARE act, currently before Congress, would eliminate the Fair Labor Standards Act exemption that currently allows kids 12-17 to work on farms as long as conditions are safe and parents give their consent. There are no exceptions allowed for non farm youth for things like 4H and other educational programs. Ron Gaskill with Farm Bureau Federation believes most folks in agriculture currently aren't even aware of this bill. GASKILL: The bill has been gaining some sponsors. It's moving very, very quietly but I think that is on purpose. The City of Portland has signed a memorandum of understanding with General Electric to collaborate on green innovations. GE will offer Portland the first look at new products and make its consultants available for projects. In favor, the city in will share information on what's going on in Portland. The document has no legal standing just a gentleman's handshake that the two entities will work together. Portland's Mayor Sam Adams said "The signing of today's MoU is a milestone in our efforts to move forward aggressively on our city's economic development strategy and our climate action plan." Other cities will be watching. Now here's today's Washington Grange Report. (GRANGE) That's today's Northwest Report. I'm Greg Martin on the Ag Information Network.
