5-14 FB McDonald's Eggs

Now the Humane Society and like minded folks are even wagging the tales of the big dogs… big dogs like Wal Mart who are in the egg selling business. I’m David Sparks and I’ll have that story in a minute. We’d all love to see free range chicken hens enjoying life, being courted by a rooster from a good family and laying eggs in predictable safe places where they’re easy to gather up. Unfortunately, that isn’t economically feasible so chickens get caged for egg production.  But a proposal was advanced by the Humane Society of the United States to require that 5 percent of the eggs purchased for the McDonald’s chain’s restaurants in the United States be the cage-free variety. The board of directors of McDonald’s has recommended that the company’s shareholders vote against a proposal.

?Some major fast food companies, including Burger King, Subway and Wendy’s, and the retailers Wal-Mart and Trader Joe’s, have already made some level of commitment to purchasing or selling cage-free eggs. Gary Merrill of Merrill Poultry Farm in Paul Idaho points out the reason for the hubbub: “Unfortunately it’s not great for agriculture but it’s the consumer. The consumer says what you gotta do. Unfortunately the consumer will vote one way and go to the grocery store and buy another.” Isn’t it funny how our ethical platforms can be built out of dollar bills.
