Corn Dust in Burley

Corn Dust in Burley

Trying to cover every angle of a grain elevator story…make that any angle. There’s an ongoing story coming out of Burley concerning the Gavilon Grain LLC, which does business as Peavey Co. Peavey is a grain operation that’s been in Burley since 1976 and handles, amongst other things,  corn…and lots of it. In fact according to the DEQ, the company has applied for a permit to install five hammer mills and increase its production from 10 million to 25 million bushels a year. Wonderful! Except that residents of Burley claim the plant gives off so much dust that it makes people in a neighboring mobile home park sick.

I tried to get comments. I called the plant and left a message for a spokesperson…no response. I called DEQ…no one there could answer my question. I called telephone information asking for phone numbers for (A) the Waltco Mobile Home Park on West Eighth Street who complained and (B) Bruce or Cathy Young, who are the residents saying they are sick of and from the dust. No listings I was told.
