New Resource for Small Producers & Less Sugar

New Resource for Small Producers & Less Sugar. I’m Greg Martin with today’s Northwest Report.

A new USDA resource for small meat, poultry, and egg processors will help address questions involving federal food safety regulations. Deputy Under Secretary Jerold Mande explains.

MANDE: Many of the companies that we work with are small and very small producers and often have many questions or just concerns about what they need to do to follow government regulations to ensure they produce a safe product. The government has rules for many things and it defines a small processor, it’s less than 500 employees and we also include very small which is actually less than 10. And often the questions they have, particularly these very small companies, they’re starting up a new business, they’re trying to follow their passion and providing a safe food product or a tasty food product to consumers but they know they have regulations they need to follow and they really need to know where to begin.

General Mills has announced that they intend to reduce the amount of sugar by 10% in cereals marketed to kids. The change comes as many food companies alter their products and face growing scrutiny from consumers, regulators and health groups over the nutritional value of their foods. Last year, Kellogg Co. reformulated a number of its U.S. cereals, decreasing the amount of sugar in adding fiber.

Now here’s today’s Washington Grange Report.
