Milk Prices Recovering

Milk Prices Recovering

Dairy appears to be on the mend…I hope, we hope, the Governor hopes. Who amongst us hasn’t felt it for the dairymen? Prices dropping so low for their products that legions of them have had to cull herds, even sell herds off and go out of business. Listen to something Governor Otter said not too long ago. “Here’s the old farmer in me, the old farmer/rancher, when you’re producing 100 pounds of milk, and it costs you $16.25 to produce it and you’re selling it for $10.50, you can’t make that up on volume.”

Well mercifully, according to Idaho Dairymens Association Executive Director Bob Naerabout, the times may be a-changin’: “A simple update is that the prices are recovering slowly. We should be in the mid $14’s for an average for the last quarter of 2009, and throughout 2010 the forecast for projected increases till it peaks in the last quarter of 2010 in the $17-19 range.”
