Potato Boycott

Potato Boycott

Friends of Animals is a Darien, Connecticut animal advocacy group dedicated to cultivating a respectful view of wild and domestic animals. That seems right. But their President, Priscilla Feral is calling for a boycott of potatoes grown in Idaho—the largest producer in the United States. Pointing to the fact that Governor Otter told a group of hunters, “I’m prepared to bid for the first ticket to shoot a wolf myself.” Feril said “As long as Idaho is in the business of killing wolves, the nature-respecting public should stop buying potatoes there.”

Frank Muir, President of the Idaho Potato Commission doesn’t quite see the tie-in between wolf hunting in Idaho and potatoes.

“There is really an inconsistent message here because Idaho potatoes is probably the most nutritious vegetable that you can eat and in these times of recession it also provides the best return on your investment. So the folks that are targeting potatoes really should think about the message because it’s conflicting their overall message and that is to eat more vegetables and more fruits. To actually target the potato, it just seems so inconsistent.
