Immigration Reform & Climate Change

Immigration Reform & Climate Change. I’m Greg Martin with today’s Northwest Report.

The President last week mentioned that immigration would become a priority issue but Washington Congressman Doc Hastings says so far there has been no mention of it on Capitol Hill?

HASTINGS: Well the President has said some things about that but there has been absolutely no action in the House. In fact for essentiall the last 3 years there’s been no action whatsoever in the House or even a hearing and there has been no bill introduced. So while I believe that there needs to be some immigration reform particularly as it relates to a workable guest worker program for our agriculture industry there has been nothing that’s been introduced in the House by the Democrats in the last 3 years

Interior Secretary Ken Salazar told Reuters Global Climate and Alternative Energy Summit, - we want both. Health care and climate change legislation. But for now, the Secretary said, - we are focused on this crusade for healthcare reform for the country and that's where our time and energy will go for the days ahead. There remains no clear direction for the “cap-and-trade” portion of expected legislation. The House legislation would give away 85 percent of the pollution permits that companies will need to lower emissions, Under that system, companies that pollute less than their allotments would be allowed to sell permits to companies that are exceeding their limits.

Now here’s today’s Washington Grange Report.
