Winding Down Cherries

Winding Down Cherries

Winding Down Cherries. I’m Greg Martin with today’s Fruit Grower Report.

So far this year has been really good year for cherries and producers are beginning to wind up the harvesting season. Gip Redman, Oregon Cherry Growers says that even though there are a lot of cherries there have been some problems.

REDMAN: For the most part it was a clean crop and quality was good until we started getting too much heat and then that’s taken its toll.

As reported earlier, cherry size has been good but according to Redman the late start to harvest was an issue as well.

REDMAN: I really feel that the lateness of the season had as much to do with problems as anything. Not having a week to ten days of more time prior to the 4th of July which is really important marketing window for our industry really put a lot of stress on it.

Prices at the grocery store are exceptional but that also means less for growers.

REDMAN: As you can imagine in an over supplied market the buyers have their way with fruit meaning they can more or less dictate pricing, more so than they normally do and on top of that they tend to be more discriminating, if I can say that, on what they receive. So the fruit that’s rejected then goes to the wholesale market and the wholesale markets quickly became overfull.

More tomorrow.

That’s today’s Fruit Grower Report. I’m Greg Martin on the Northwest Ag Information Network.
