Summer White Wine Gewurztraminer

Summer White Wine Gewurztraminer

Welcome to Vine to Wine, I’m your host Linda Moran.  I seem to be on a roll lately indulging in the white wines of summer. Let’s talk about a great summer white wine especially with summer heat upon us, Gewurztraminer.

Yes I know it is a long word and not an easy one to spell but I think Gewurztraminer is worth the effort. You can even refer to it as Gewurz if that helps. Gewurz is the German word for spice. This is what we love about this wine. It has an intoxicated and beautiful fragrance that is all its own. But it is not an easy grape to grow. In order to capture all of that lovely fruit and fragrance you must allow the grapes to have some time hanging  on the vines so they can develop the appropriate levels of acidity to compliment the fruit and the fragrance. If this doesn’t happen the wines may seem very flabby, flat or insipid and we don’t want that. It is said that the best Gewurz comes from Germany or the Alsace of France and I do agree. However, I have had some very good Gewurztraminer from Washington state. Like Riesling it loves our cool evenings and long growing season. Ask for suggestions from your local wine merchant.  And if you find one you particularly enjoy by all means send me your suggestions. In the meantime, remember to send your wine questions to linda at vine to wine dot net and thanks for joining me on today’s Vine to Wine.
