Manure Digester

Manure Digester

It is confusing to live in this world of ours. Democrat…Republican…Stimulus package Good?...or Bad? Do manure digesters work? Depends on who you talk to. Paul Kjellander,  Administrator for the Idaho Office of Energy Resources. “We’re interested in proposing legislation that would help to develop the opportunities to take dairy waste and convert that to pipeline quality natural gas. “It’s basically the process in which you will put the appropriate anaerobic digestion materials together with the manure and then that will create the methane that you can then draw off and process into the pipeline quality natural gas.”

Here’s David Albers, President and CEO of BioEnergy Solutions. “We’ll design it, we’ll install it, we’ll operate it, we’ll take full responsibility for it, and as that manure’s in that digester, it breaks down and gases off, we collect the gas, we upgrade it to pipeline quality methane and we sell it on long-term contract. That allows us to write 2 different checks to the dairyman.”

Bob Naerbout, Executive Director of the Idaho Dairymen’s Association. “Digesters I think you have to remember, you put a pound of manure in you’re gonna get a pound of manure out the backside. It doesn’t reduce the amount of nutrients or manure. It just generates some energy. It’s still pretty subjective about what they do for the environment.”
