Idaho Potato Crop Update

Idaho Potato Crop Update

This week has been a good time to get reports from some of our big crop producers because there have been delays due to weather. Wet and cold is a mixed blessing. It brings desperately needed water which is good, but holds up producers in terms of plantings. Jerry Wright, President  and CEO of United Potato Growers of Idaho. “Planting has begun in earnest over in Western Idaho and is moving East, slowed somewhat by the weather of the last 10 days. Planting had just begun in the Magic Valley, I think everything has come to a screeching halt while they dry out for a few days and then they’ll get going again. Not much planting in Southeastern Idaho, maybe in a few sand areas, but the reality is nobody’s out in the fields, they’re still pretty wet. Western Idaho is well onto and almost completed with the planting.”

We’ve had reports from wheat and sugar beet people saying delayed and now potato farmers are delayed. Will we catch up?

 (Wright) “Absolutely”
