Selecting Wine in a Restaurant

Selecting Wine in a Restaurant

Welcome to Vine to Wine this is your host Linda Moran. It has been a long while since I have been asked for some helpful hints to follow when selecting a wine from a restaurant wine list. Since the topic just came up let’s revisit the topic on today’s program.

When selecting a wine from a restaurant wine list we might find it challenging. For one thing anything we recognize from buying in a retail store we realize that it is priced at three or more times the cost. As far as the ones you’ve never heard of you don’t even have the option of reading the label to find something out about it. Oh yeah and the server just might be breathing down your neck waiting for a decision. So rather than have them hover put them to use by asking a few questions. Let them know if you prefer red or white wine. Narrow it down to your price range if you feel comfortable with that. All of this helps narrow your choices. Inquire if the server has tasted any wines that meet your criteria and if so what would they recommend. Very often there are servers in the restaurant who are quite knowledgeable so don’t hesitate to ask.
I would also recommend that try something new, I often venture into a single vineyard wine or a special production that is only available through restaurants. Your server should know these things or find someone who does. After all, if you are going to pay an inflated price you may as well have an adventure. Visit our website and give us your suggestions for program topics, your wine questions and comments email Linda at vine to wine dot net and thanks for joining me on today’s Vine to Wine.
