Cricket & Apples

Apples & Cricket. I’m Greg Martin with today’s Fruit Grower Report.

What do wickets, bats, stumps and bowlers have to do with Washington Apples? Lacy Gray has more on this interesting story.

GRAY: Six Washington apple varieties have become part of a strategic partnership with the Royal Challengers Bangalore cricket team, a part of the Indian Premiere League. The apples are now the ‘Official Fruit Partner of Royal Challengers’ during this season. The apple varieties are Fuji, Gala, Honeycrisp, Cripps Pink, Granny Smith, and Braeburn. India is among the fourth largest markets for the Washington apple and sales have been growing at over 20% annually during the past five years. South India is one of the largest regions in terms of sales of Washington Apples. Russell Adams, VP, commercial operation, & Cricket Academy at RCB, said, “We firmly believe and promote health habits, importance of fitness and active lifestyle among our followers. This endeavour with Washington Apples will add value to our brand and to our commitment towards our fans.”

Thanks Lacy. The partnership was brought about by the Washington Apple Commission and is a strong move since outside of the U.S. cricket is one of the most popular sports and yours truly has become quite a fan over the last several years. The Commission is hoping that this partnership will also raise awareness of Washington apples with consumers and increase sales in India.
