Yesterday I talked about the vegetarian movement that would like to destroy animal agriculture. I’m Jeff Keane; today, right after this break, I’ll continue with some thoughts from the other side of the fence.Vegetarianism in America has passed individual choice and is now reaching near-religious proportions. With massive budgets contributed by publicity-seeking celebrities and uninformed citizens, radical vegan groups wage a campaign that portrays all animal agriculture as basically a wicked industry. There have been mistakes made in the industry to be sure, but the vast majority cares for their animals to the best of their ability as animal tenders have for over 12,000 years. Texan veterinarian, Steve McDonald, believes vegans would like to return to pre-Industrial Revolution subsistence farming, without manure as a fertilizer since there will be no farm animals. Personally, I don’t think we can raise enough vegetables, fruits, nuts or twigs to feed an expanding, hungry world population. Grazing animals, using the immense, arid grasslands of our globe, convert those grasses into edible, high quality protein for human consumption. I don’t believe people could live very long eating grass along with a few veggies and grain products. Dr. McDonald states all animal production people should join the pro-ag group, Animal Agriculture Alliance. I would suggest any citizen wanting to contribute to the well being of animals to donate to this organization also. After all, giving to groups dedicated to destroying animal agriculture may be promoting world hunger. I’m Jeff Keane.
