12/19/08 Christmas 2008

Christmas is a special time of year for many people and I know it is for me. I'm Jeff Keane; I'll be right back with some American Rancher Christmas thoughts. Christmas time is a time of rejoicing, giving and receiving. It is a time of tradition, fabulous food, special treats, and for those of us lucky enough, it is a time for family to be together. For ranchers, Christmas brings all these times of fun and family, but one thing can't be overlooked the animals still need to be fed and looked after. Somehow for me, caring for the livestock on Christmas morning offers its own giving and rewards. There always seems to be a soft quiet around the animals. Even if a wind is blowing the barn extends that warm haven only a barn can give. The barn and animals have a little different significance when I think of the stable that was so special on that day long ago. While I'm feeding, I consider that these animals are descendants of some of the animals that were there and made up His welcoming committee. There is a real good chance the livestock will be fed just a little extra on this morning. After all, they have given to me so I want to give to them. Even feeding the range cows out in the snow and weather I can feel a calm difference on Christmas. I hope everyone has a beautiful Christmas and you give and receive the gifts that last. I know I'll be given mine before I head back to the house Christmas morning. Have a very, merry Christmas.
