11/04/08 Dangerous trails

It is no surprise that as more urbanites elect to recreate in our wilderness there will be more attempts to get horses removed from the back country. What I find shocking though is the ignorant and horrible lengths some will go to get horses off trails. Stayed tuned! After the break, you will want to hear the story that has outraged horse owners across the nation. As more urbanites buy second homes or recreate in our backyard there will be conflicts over who should use public trails. That's why groups like North Country Riders work so hard to keep trails open, so we won't loose our right to ride. In Massachusetts trail riding could be lethal. Susan, fill us in on a travesty we hope will not become a trend. I am almost afraid to share this story, Jeff .I don't want to give activists ideas, but booby traps have been rigged on popular horse trails. Since August there have been ten reported accounts of wire strung across trails at the head and neck level of someone riding a horse. Most riders were walking when they made contact but at a faster clip the rider could be thrown or have their neck sliced. In some cases a mousetrap was attached to spook the horse as well. Jeff, this has all been occurring near Lincoln, Massachusetts a community known for maintaining miles of trails for biking and horseback riding. Susan our society has become so twisted who would think something as innocent as trail riding could be under attack. Protect our right to ride and be sure to report any incidents on our trails. I'm Jeff Keane.
