Just how long will private property remain private? I'm Jeff Keane; I'll be right back with comments on that very important question.
Will private property remain private? I don't think the question should ever have to be asked in the United States. I believe being able to own land and being assured of private property rights are part of the foundation that makes America so special. But, there are people who worry that is not the thought of some of those who help govern this nation. John Goggin's editorial in Western Ag Reporter discusses his concerns about private property rights. He thinks one of the major goals of the United States government is to allow public access to all property in this country. John states there are various groups spending lots of money to lobby for public access to all lands in our nation. Many people want more land for hunting, fishing, bird watching or just general recreation so they donate to these lobbyists who tell them enough money will make it happen. One other trend that Mr. Goggins points out is the USDA's approval to implement President Bush's plan to offer incentives at the rate of three dollars per acre for owners of Conservation Reserve Program land who will allow public access to those areas. Goggins predicts any future renewals of CRP contracts will have language pertaining to mandatory public entry and warns three dollars per acre might be a very expensive payment if it allows another step toward letting all citizens roam your land. I have to agree. I'm Jeff Keane.
