10/01/08 Apples & Kids

Apple & Kids! I'm Greg Martin with today's Fruit Grower Report. Teaching kids early is a great way to create good strong future habits and when that includes eating good healthy apples, it's a win-win. The Washington Apple Commission has come up with a way to help reinforce healthy eating and some fun. FRYHOVER: We have such things as Kid's Eye View which is where children can come in and write a letter to us about the benefits and health aspects of Washington Apples and they can win a free t-shirt. There's a fact trivia section. There is a game and activity section which is absolutely fantastic. That's Todd Fryhover with the Apple Commission. The Commission recently received a grant from the WSDA and matched it to develop the site. FRYHOVER: There's a Crispy's Kitchen where kids can go in and make some wonderful, healthy foods for themselves and a Teacher's Corner where you can go in as a teacher and print off materials for coloring activities or apple nutrition fun facts. According to Fryhover, the web site is ready to go. FRYHOVER: It's basically launching right now. We're going out with posters and brochures to most of the elementary schools in the Wenatchee and Yakima surrounding areas and that will take place next week so look for your posters in your schools within the next week or two. You can access the site at www.bestapples.com/kids. That's today's Fruit Grower Report. I'm Greg Martin on the Northwest Ag Information Network.
