09/11/08 Art for Apple's Sake

Art for Apple's Sake. I'm Greg Martin with today's Fruit Grower Report. I am not an artist but if I were to try and pick a paint brush I would probably start with a nice still life featuring a vase and maybe some fruit featuring a beautiful Washington Apple. Well there were a lot of young people drawing Washington Apples for the Washington Apple Education Foundation's annual Year of the Apple art contest. WITHERBEE: Chloe Lyn Johnson from Spokane is the grand prize winner this year in the 13th Annual Year of the Apple art contest. She submitted an incredible rendering of Golden and Gala apples and we had the honor of getting to go to her high school and surprise her in front of all of her classmates with the grand prize award. That is Jennifer Witherbee, Executive Director of the Washington Apple Education Foundation. WITHERBEE: As the grand prize winner, Chloe's artwork will be featured on the Dow AgroSciences poster calendar for 2009 and Chloe also receives a $1000 savings bond. Each year WAEF gives away a number of scholarships to students and according to Witherbee, the 2009 application is now online. WITHERBEE: The Foundation this week released the 2009 universal scholarship application. What's so exciting about this year's scholarship application is that we have added more awards, over 100 different scholarships. That's today's Fruit Grower Report. I'm Greg Martin on the Northwest Ag Information Network.
