07/30/08 Text Messaging

Would someone please tell me what is so all fired important to some people that they will intentionally put themselves and others in harms way in order to text message while they are on the go? It is one thing to multitask, and sheer lunacy to run into walls, fall down stairs, bump into parked cars, lampposts and garbage cans or step into oncoming traffic all for the sake of texting on the go. In fact, I think this one far surpasses even the highly annoying group of people who appear to be talking way too loud to themselves in store isles and restaurants while using their wireless headsets. At least they are only causing confusion and irritation; "you talking to me?" The multitasking texters however are not only endangering themselves but those around them; case in point, a cyclist killed by a texting driver in 2005. Emergency rooms are filled with injuries sustained while text messaging on the go. And the sad thing is that these people refuse to change their dangerous texting ways even after experiencing such injuries or at the very least having their egos bruised.
