07/15/08 College polo

Ivy League sports like La Cross are becoming popular at our universities, so it is no surprise that the Sport of Kings has gained a quite a following. I'm Jeff Keane and I will be back after the break with more on colligate polo. Oregon State's baseball team didn't make it to the finals this year, but their polo team sure did and will be competing for the National title this Spring. Here is Susan Allen with the college polo scene in the Northwest. Eastern Oregon University, WSU, Montana State University, and University of Idaho make up our region. The Beavers men's team will be following in the footsteps of OSU"S women's team who lost to two-time National Champions, University of Connecticut at last years finals. WSU has been tough as well with the men making it to the finals four times since 1999. Jeff did you know Polo is one of the largest of the five intercollegiate clubs in the Northwest, Unlike rodeo handful of events, college polo is sanctioned for a full year of competition and the school provides the horses. The game is played in an arena with teams consisting of 3 players each. Thirty colleges compete for a championship match that has been played every year since 1922. Susan, the tough teams to beat year after year are Cornell, University of Virginia, Texas A & M and Colorado State. Good luck Beavers! The American Rancher will be reporting on your trip to the National Finals held at the Kentucky Horse Park this coming April. I'm Jeff Keane.
