06/05/08 Apple Imagery

Apple Imagery. I'm Greg Martin with today's Fruit Grower Report. In the world of agriculture there is a lot of imagery. You know, those iconic blends of produce and Americana. From literature and photography to the TV & movies, food products have played an important part and not just for eating. No one produce item seems to bring more images to mind than the apple. Alan Taylor, spokesperson for Pink Lady America says the imagery is everywhere. TAYLOR: Well we were one day just talking about the nutritional aspects of apples and why they're healthy and the conversation turned to what other elements are related to apples. It's one of those things where it's more than something that's round and comes in a number of colors and has a good taste, it has a lot of history and a lot of elements that goes with it as well. I'm sure there are a lot of images involving apples are starting to pop into your head. TAYLOR: First of all you can talk about history. You've got the Garden of Eden, Sir Isaac Newton, William Tell, Johnny Appleseed. It's got a real rich history. And then you do have the fact that the apples a symbol for a lot of things. It's good health, talking about keeping the doctor away; education it's a gift for your favorite teacher or actually it's a symbol of education. Mom and apple pie or as All-American as apple pie. Apple Pie was the name of the first garage band I played in during my youth. All this imagery is being put to good use according to Taylor. TAYLOR: Well we're going to take this whole concept of apples taking on a life more than what you'd think about as being just something that's nutritious and build it into a concept where it's part of your everyday life. That it is something that is a symbol of a lot of really positive things. That's today's Fruit Grower Report. I'm Greg Martin on the Northwest Ag Information Network.
