With today's Fruit Grower Report, I'm Bob Larson. The next WAVEx is fast approaching. It's the half-day version of the popular Washington Advancement of Viticulture and Enology wine research seminars.

Washington Wine Commission's Melissa Hansen says this one is being held Wednesday at the Chateau Ste. Michelle Winery in Woodinville ...

HANSEN ... "Yeah, so we have a great WAVEx coming. The, sort of, the theme is "Managing Native Yeasts and Bacteria," and two specialists with WSU, Washington State University, will be speaking."

Hansen says this WAVEx will begin with information about managing yeasts and bacteria to improve wine quality ...

HANSEN ... "And the, one of the things we'll be doing at the very end will be to have a "sensory evaluation" of what's called "microbial instability in wines." That's a, I guess, a technical term for flawed wines. They'll be able to smell what does a Brett wine smell like, what does, you know, when somethings gone wrong, what does it smell like. And so, we will have about a half an hour of a sensory evaluation of these flawed wines."

If you're interested, Hansen says space is limited so don't wait to register ...

HANSEN ... "Yes, the best way is to go to the website, www.washingtonwine.org and if they go to either on the front page, there's a calendar of events and it's under the calendar, or if they go under the research tab, there's actually a Wave button and the registration information is there as well."

The WAVE and WAVEx seminars help growers and winemakers access and apply research outcomes in their operations.
