01/22/08 Marsanne

Welcome to Vine to Wine this is your host Linda Moran. On today's program, we are going to discuss Marsanne a grape varietal that is showing up a lot more here in the United States. Marsanne is a grape varietal, which hails from the North Rhone region of France. It is one of the many white grapes that seem to be quite fashionable. Although, not as fashionable as Viognier. It is a white grape, which has gained in popularity as a component of many blended white wines. It is a common blending partner with Rousanne, which is notably more difficult to grow but has fuller body and very attractive acidity. Marsanne by comparison often lacks acidity but is much broader in other fragrances and flavors. Surprisingly enough the Australian state of Victoria is home to some of the world's oldest Marsanne vineyards. Here in the United States- thanks in great part to the efforts of the wine group the Rhone Rangers we are growing many of the Rhone varietals most familiar are Syrah and Grenache. However, in some places in California and Washington State we are seeing Marsanne not only used in the traditional Rhone blends but also every once in awhile on its own. I would recommend searching out a few Marsanne's and maybe even Rousanne's from different parts of the world and having a fun tasting with friends. Remember to send your wine questions to Linda at Vine to Wine dot net and thanks for joining me on today's Vine to Wine.
