Belay that. I'm Greg Martin with today's Line On Agriculture.
I'm a bit of a nautical buff. I love to get out on the boat and start showing off my nautical terminology. Port, Starboard, mainsail, scurvy and my favorite pirate word, Arrrr. One nautical word, "belay" means to stop and that's just what the new Belay" insecticide from Valent Corporation is designed to do according to Trevor Dale, with Valent.
DALE: Belay" is a new insecticide from Valent for potatoes for 2008, very recently received registration. The great thing about Belay" is it provides wide spectrum of insect control. In other words it's very good on Colorado potato beetles, leafhoppers, and aphids including green peach aphids and potato aphids.
The new insecticide is for use on both soil and foliage.
DALE: Belay" 16 WSG is the product that will be used for soil. That means in furrow or at cracking basically before the crop emerges application and we're recommending the 16oz rate on that product. And then Belay" 50 WDG is the foliar formulation and the rate range on that from 1 to 1 ½ oz and we're going to be recommending and promoting the ounce and a half rate.
Dale says it is really effective regardless of which way you choose to apply it. The product is available in many states now.
DALE: It's been registered for several months and I heard in mid-December that about 40 of the states had approved it already. For certain in the next month or two every state will have it will be registered in every state with the exception of California and New York.
Other information about the new product is there is no buffering needed and there are no crop rotation restrictions.
DALE: There's no concerns there. The only thing we don't allow is if you make a soil application of Belay", you cannot come back with a foliar application of Belay" and we're really just doing that as resistance management basically.
If you'd like more information on the new products from Valent be sure and ask your representative or visit their website.
