08/14/07 Sustainable Wine Growing

Welcome to Vine to Wine this is your host Linda Moran. Today we are going to answer a question from the email. Recently a listener wrote to ask if I could briefly describe sustainable wine growing. So today in the minute we have together I will try to that. Sustainable wine growing programs are governed both state and regionally. They are guidelines as to how to grow grapes so that they provide benefits for the growers, the environment, the wineries and the community. Although the benefits are both concrete and intangible, we do know that regulators and customers as well look favorably on the efforts. The practices reduce the costs of energy, also reduce irrigation and uses fewer chemicals, which is healthier for the workers and the environment. Much of this also enhances the quality of the crop and good grapes have a better chance of making good wine. All of which contributes to consumers' support. I would have to say that many of the wine grape growers I know are practicing sustainable farming to some extent and the popularity of varying degrees of sustainable , organic and biodynamic agriculture we are are growing  no pun intended  through out the wine industry.
