06/12/07 Taking to the Green

Taking to the green. I'm Greg Martin with today's Fruit Grower Report. I have a confession. I can't golf. I've tried. I like to watch the game and even to attempt to play it but sometimes you have to admit defeat. But unlike me, if you enjoy the game now is a great time to hit the green. The Washington State Horticultural Association's Memorial Scholarship Golf Tournament is looking for you according to Lynette Smith, Horts' Communications Director. SMITH: It should be a lot of fun. You don't need to be a member to participate and again it's for a great cause. We hope that anyone who is interested in golfing joins us for the tournament and help honor our friends who are no longer with us. Smith says it's not just about playing golf. SMITH: All proceeds from our tournament support scholarships that are awarded to students in honor and memory of the past tree fruit industry leaders, Gerald Nolen, Melvin Crowder, Jim Matson & Delmar Smith. Last year 25 teams of golfers raised a little over 11 thousand dollars. SMITH: Thank you to Key Bank, Pace International and Wilbur Ellis for being our headline tournament sponsors. Teams are limited to 144 players - 36 teams which are filling up quickly. Over the past 13 years the tournament has raised over 95-thousand 500 dollars for student scholarships. All entries must be received by July 27th and the entry fee for the event covers gold cart rentals, green fees, 18-hole scramble, a commemorative tournament hat, entry into the tournament contest as well as a barbeque at the end of the day. That's today's Fruit Grower Report. I'm Greg Martin on the Northwest Ag Information Network.
