05/14/07 Wine Magazines

Welcome to Vine to Wine this is your host Linda Moran. I subscribe to a few magazines and of course I follow the wine writers in them and I must say that I often wonder are these writers creating the trends, or judging them, and us. I read about wine in trendy magazines because I want to learn something new. I love hearing peoples' opinions about wine and I am forever grateful to learn more about a wine region or a new style or type of wine. The individuals who subscribe and read these magazines are intelligent and obviously paying attention, so I find it interesting that writers rarely revisit wineries. They are always looking for the new kid on the block. I guess you are passé if you were the new thing last year. But what is going on and how much have those last year or past decades trendsetters learned and explored. I have been revisiting wineries that were within the past 10 years the hip trendy wineries with the young winemakers. It has been very rewarding. Now we all have opinions and one of the beautiful things about wine, from the consumer point of view, is there should be no wrong answers. So today I advise you to read and recognize and respect the opinion of a writer but move on and keep your mind open to revisiting some of the old favorites and seeing what amazing new things they are doing. I mean the least thing that could happen is they are still making consistently good wines. Although they may have been forgotten by the trendsetters, I now consider them, and their new vintages, one of those "best kept secrets". You know, they are becoming my new wines to explore. Remember to send your wine questions to Linda at vine to wine dot net and thank you for joining me on today's Vine to Wine.
