California farmers and researchers have a new opportunity to turn smart ideas into real world solutions.

The California Department of Food and Agriculture is now accepting pre proposals for its 2026 Fertilizer Research and Education Program, or FREP. The program funds projects that help farmers use nutrients and water more efficiently while protecting the environment. This year, CDFA is looking for projects that focus on practical solutions, like improving soil health, reducing fertilizer runoff, and helping growers adopt new technologies. There is also a strong push for outreach and education efforts that make these tools easier to use in the field.

CDFA is especially encouraging projects that support socially disadvantaged farmers and farm workers who may not have had equal access to resources in the past.

Pre proposals are due April 27. To learn more or apply, head to cdfa.ca.gov.

Since 1990, FREP has invested more than 32 million dollars in projects that support sustainable agriculture across California.
