Cotton leaders are pressing Congress to take action that they say could boost demand for American-grown fiber.

The National Cotton Council announced it is leading a bipartisan coalition in support of the Buying American Cotton Act, House Resolution 7230. The legislation was introduced by Representative Greg Murphy of North Carolina and Representative Terri Sewell of Alabama. According to the Council, the coalition includes a range of national retailers and industry stakeholders.

In a letter sent to members of the U.S. House of Representatives, the group is urging lawmakers to co-sponsor the bill. National Cotton Council Chairman Nathan Reed said, "The strong list of signers on this letter reflects a true, bipartisan effort to enhance U.S. cotton consumption here in the U.S." He added, "BACA will help stimulate demand for U.S. cotton, support our farmers, encourage new investment in U.S. textile mills, and create jobs here at home."

The National Cotton Council says the proposal aims to strengthen the domestic cotton supply chain from farm to retail.
