USDA Plans Thirty Million Dollar Fruit Purchase

The U.S. Department of Agriculture is stepping in with a significant purchase of fresh fruit, up to thirty million dollars’ worth, to support American farmers and help families who rely on food banks. U.S. Secretary of Agriculture Brooke Rollins says this move is about backing producers at a time when certain crops are piling up and need a reliable place to go.

Rollins says, “President Trump is standing with America’s farmers, especially right now while the farm economy recovers from years of neglect under the last administration. Certain commodities are experiencing a surplus and USDA is ensuring these crops do not go to waste and instead go to Americans in need across the country.” She adds that the plan will put healthier options in front of families while also helping producers who are dealing with unfair actions from foreign competitors.

This purchase uses USDA’s long standing Section 32 authority under the Agriculture Act of 1935.

USDA plans to purchase fifteen million dollars in fresh oranges, ten million in grapefruit, and five million in mandarins, something you can bet California Growers will be keeping an eye on.
