10/6/06 Border Security & Crop Report

Border security & Crop report. I'm Greg Martin with today's Northwest Report. President Bush on Wednesday signed a homeland security bill that includes an overhaul of the Federal Emergency Management Agency and $1.2 billion for fencing along the U.S.-Mexico border to stem illegal immigration. Standing before a mountainous backdrop in Arizona, a state that has been the center of much debate over secure borders, Bush signed into law a $35 billion homeland security spending bill that could bring hundreds of miles of fencing to the busiest illegal entry point on the U.S.-Mexican border. BUSH: The funds that Congress appropriated are critical for our efforts to secure this border and enforce our laws. Yet we must also recognize that enforcement alone is not going to work. We need a comprehensive reform that provides a legal way for people to work here on a temporary basis. It's going to relieve pressure on the border. USDA`s National Ag Statistics Service is getting ready to release its October Crop Production report. The report will be released on October 12th and will include updated yield and production forecasts for row crops. That information is based on producer data from the Agricultural Yield Survey and plant and fruit counts from fields sampled as part of the Objective Yield Survey. NASS will also review the Farm Service Agency`s certified crop acreage information before the upcoming report. If necessary - updates to planted and harvested acreage for dry edible beans, canola, corn, sorghum, soybeans, and sunflower in all states will be included in the October Crop Production report. Now here's today's Washington Grange Report. (GRANGE) That's today's Northwest Report. I'm Greg Martin on the Northwest Ag Information Network.
