Here’s a name you’ve probably heard before—Rick Pate. He’s been Alabama’s Commissioner of Agriculture and Industries since 2019, and now he’s setting his sights on a new role. Pate just announced that he’s running for lieutenant governor in 2026.

The news came during a luncheon with the Alabama Associated General Contractors in Montgomery. With his second term as ag commissioner wrapping up—and term limits in place—Pate says he still feels called to serve. He’s hoping to bring his experience and relationships to the Alabama Senate in this new role.

If you’ve followed his career, you know public service is nothing new for Rick Pate. He was the mayor of Lowndesboro for 14 years before moving into state government. And before that? He spent over 30 years running a successful commercial landscaping business. He’s also an Auburn grad with a degree in ornamental horticulture.

Pate joins a growing field of Republican candidates eyeing the lieutenant governor seat, which will be open as current Lt. Gov. Will Ainsworth reaches his term limit.

So—2026 is already shaping up to be an interesting election year in Alabama!
