Report Shows Strawberries are King of Berries

This is Lorrie Boyer for the Ag Information Network. The California Strawberry Commission recently unveiled the 2024 State of the Strawberry Category report. Jeff Cardinale director of communications for the Strawberry Commission, shares some of the details in the report. 

"I think the main thing is just to re emphasize or re highlight that strawberries are the key force when it comes to, you know, to fruit and market, strawberries are king. And you know, both the the retail industry really relies on strawberries to drive people into the store, to keep people in the store, and to create new customers and to bring repeat customers. So this, this report really emphasizes what I think a lot of people already know is that strawberries are really essential to retail."

Cardinale commends producers, growers, and processors for their efforts highlighted in this report and what they do to bring strawberries to market.

"The biggest takeaway from this is the double-digit volume growth, increasing 11% year over year, outpacing all other berry varieties. Strawberries hold a 60% share of the berry category volume. So it's it really is telling that people that go to the store and head to the produce aisle, you know, overwhelmingly are looking for strawberries."
